KUALA LUMPUR, November 17 – Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin encourages those who have the knowledge and scientific proof of a product that includes marijuana for medical purposes to register said product with the National Medicines Regulatory Agency (NPRA) for evaluation.

In his closing address in Parliament, Khairy said that once the product has been evaluated by the NPRA, it will be registered under the Medicines and Cosmetics Control Regulations 1984 before being marketed in the country.

He added that the use of medical marijuana was permitted in Malaysia because it did not violate the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the Poisons Act 1952 or the Sale of Medicines Act 1952.

“If there is sufficient scientific evidence for the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, taking into account aspects of quality, safety and efficacy, product registration for drug purpose may be submitted to the NPRA for evaluation and registration under the Drug Control and Cosmetics Regulations 1984 which will subsequently be marketed in Malaysia.

“Currently, there are no cannabis-based products for human medical treatment registered in Malaysia. NPRA registered a cannabis-based product called Sativex in 2014. However, at the company’s request, this product was de-registered in 2017,,” he said.

In September, Syed Siddiq asked the government to consider legalizing medical marijuana and cannabis.

At the time, he said the government should not shy away from talking about the topic just for societal sensitivities, and instead should be guided by data-based studies and science.
