Green Wednesday: Cannabis Black Friday

Thanksgiving ranks first in five days of annual cannabis sales. data It shows that shoppers spent $238 million over this weekend in 2020, an increase of nearly 13% over the previous year.

Although you might think it was due to the Black Friday specials, it was actually the day before Thanksgiving where the bulk of these sales took place. Thus, the day before Thanksgiving is officially dubbed Green Wednesday.

What is Green Wednesday?

Green Wednesday happens the day before Thanksgiving, as shoppers flock to the dispensaries to stock up on pre-rolls, e-cigarette pens, dyes, foods and more. Although 4/20 is still the number one spot in cannabis sales, Green Wednesday is far behind.

While the exact cause is unknown, the logic suggests several possible theories. First, eating a massive meal of your favorite dishes for hours on end requires a little extra motivation. Enter — the munchies.

Thanksgiving tends to be about family gatherings, and for some people, it isn’t always the most comfortable place. If you’re looking to tune in to your uncle’s antics or find new fun listening to the same old stories that Grandma loves to tell, a weed buzz can go a long way.

The most practical reason to shop on Green Wednesday is simply that many businesses are closed on Thursday and maybe even Friday, and it’s best to stock up on the weekend.

When did Green Wednesday start?

As the story goes, Eaze — California’s cannabis delivery service — coined the term after a particularly impressive sales day in 2016. Surprised by the green rush on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Green Wednesday seemed apt. The name got popular, and now, dispensaries are marketing the specials just as they do on April 20 (4/20) and July 10 (7/10).

Since then, Green Wednesday sales have continued to rise. Dispensaries report an 80% increase in sales the day before Thanksgiving, outperforming Black Friday sales. In 2020, Green Wednesday saw $33.2 million and Black Friday $31.1 million.
