Title: As for the benefits of coffee, it doesn’t matter whether it’s caffeinated or decaffeinated

Dear doctor. ROACH: I switched from drinking caffeinated coffee to decaffeinated coffee with the Swiss Water Process about two years ago. The reason I switched to decaffeinated was because I was dizzy when I got out of bed at night to use the bathroom. The dizziness only lasted for a few seconds, but it was annoying. My doctor suggested switching to decaffeinated because caffeine might have been the problem. I only drink one cup a day in the morning, but I thought I’d switch anyway. I certainly didn’t feel dizzy. Does this type of decaffeinated coffee or any other decaffeinated coffee offer the same benefits as regular coffee? I read that caffeinated coffee has some benefits, such as reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, some types of cancer, diabetes and may protect the liver, etc.? Although I’m not sure if this is 100% accurate, is it the caffeine that has the benefits? – n.

Answer: Those who drink coffee – both regular and decaffeinated ones – are less likely to develop heart disease than those who do not drink it. There are other benefits associated with drinking coffee, including a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, alcoholic cirrhosis, and gout. Both caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee are also linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The overall cancer risk is not reduced among coffee drinkers than among non-drinkers.

It is not clear whether drinking coffee causes these benefits! Coffee drinkers may have other behaviors responsible for these benefits. Not all studies showed a benefit, and the largest study reports a 16% lower risk of all-cause mortality associated with coffee drinking.

Consumption of high levels of caffeine can be associated with short-term adverse effects, including headache, anxiety, tremors, and insomnia, depending on past patterns of caffeine use. Chronic users are less sensitive to the adverse behavioral effects of caffeine than non-users. Stopping caffeine can cause withdrawal symptoms, especially if done quickly.

Dear doctor. Roach: I have severe tinnitus from a head injury related to a bicycle accident a few years ago. I’ve been recently bombarded with ads on social media claiming amazing cures for tinnitus (as well as many other pains) from CBD gum. Is there any reputable evidence to support these claims? – RF

Answer: I also see ads for many medical conditions promoting the healing properties of cannabis (CBD), which is a non-psychoactive (meaning it doesn’t make you “high”) chemical found naturally in cannabis. CBD has many potential medicinal uses; However, the hype has so far surpassed hard evidence.

In the case of tinnitus, there are theoretical reasons why cannabis extracts, especially CBD, may be beneficial. Evidence for effectiveness is not strong. There are a few studies, at least one of which has shown some benefits. Pure CBD is safe, and may be worth a try. I would stress that not all products sold as CBD are actually CBD, and some contain THC. The best way to make sure you get what you want is an external lab analysis (often called a Certificate of Analysis) showing that you’re getting CBD and not THC, the main psychoactive chemicals in cannabis.
