Regulators must provide clear medical advice on marijuana to workers

Since 2016, the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program has provided more than 600,000 patients and caregivers with lifesaving drugs. Every day, medical marijuana patients in Pennsylvania responsibly use their medication to treat one of 23 serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, many patients fear that their work will be affected given the failure of regulators to explain and enforce the current law.

Regulators in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have let down the workforce by remaining silent when it comes to employment matters. Now big employers are pushing for SB 749, legislation that would penalize working patients for access to life-saving drugs. As employers struggle to hire, it is inconceivable that Pennsylvania would even consider legislation that restricts the workforce further.

Rather than “opening” complex bipartisan legislation, our representatives should call on the Pennsylvania Secretary of Health and Secretary of Labor to issue clear guidance on existing law. Guidance would provide clarity and certainty to all parties.
