Skopje, North Macedonia (AFP) – Police in North Macedonia have raided a company that legally grows marijuana for medical purposes and confiscated about 1.5 tons of cannabis due to “irregularities” in the company’s operations, Macedonia’s interior minister said on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Oliver Spasovsky said in a written statement that the seized quantity had not been declared and had been confiscated “due to irregularities in the work of the legal entity.” He did not provide further details, and the police did not respond to requests for clarification.
Tuesday’s raid took place in the southern town of Strumica, where several companies licensed to grow medical marijuana are based in North Macedonia. No arrests were made.
Macedonia was among the first Balkan countries to allow patients to legally purchase and use marijuana products for medicinal – not recreational – purposes.
Since 2016, the authorities have issued more than 60 licenses to grow medical cannabis.
Former Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, who resigned earlier this year after ruling since 2017, has been a staunch supporter of marijuana legalization and advocated its recreational use in tourist hotspots, including the capital Skopje and the lakeside town of Ohrid. But his proposals never made it to Parliament.
