Big data has always been the buzzword across industries. Companies are taking advantage of technology to gather more information about consumers to target and personalize campaigns. Think about the algorithms of Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Thus increasing profits. The public sector has also realized the impact of this big, high-frequency data and information in real time to align their policies with social realities. Most importantly, lobbyists use data analytics to support their causes and advance their cases.

Aside from collecting general sentiment from Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms, Google Trends provides historical data going back to 2004, making it a rich source for data miners.

Using Google Trends to gather insights about cannabis, one can ask any question under the sun. For example, if I’m new to the topic and want to understand cannabis use in Canada, I can post Google Trends to investigate. Let’s Begin!

Figure 1 illustrates the continued interest in the topic of cannabis in Canada by the volume of searches on Google since 2004. However, data analysts could easily spot a “data anomaly” in 2018 as it rose and waned thereafter. The beauty of data is that it raises questions and guides you to uncover and explore. Figure 3 below shows the shift in interest by subregion and Canadian names Nunavut as the sub-area most interested in the topic. In turn, this leads to further inquiry as to what causes and what happens within cannabis industry in this location.
So far in 2022, “cannabis shop near me” It has the highest query rate for “cannabis”, along with topics ranging from packaging and labeling to the state of cannabis in the country, which may indicate developments in the industry. The supply and demand insights that may be derived from this data maximize profit opportunities for businesses and enable timely and appropriate monitoring by the public sector.
