Historic Massachusetts inn was gutted by a fire Saturday morning

according to WMTWa historic bed and breakfast located on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts that was badly damaged by a fire Saturday morning.

The fire that engulfed The Veranda House, which the article says dates back to the 17th century, was reported at about 6:45 a.m. Saturday.

Fortunately, despite the first hour, everyone was able to safely get out of the hotel. However, the captain of the Nantucket Fire Department, who searched the hotel for guests, was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

In addition, several hundred people in the area around the inn had lost their strength.

Thanks to several high-speed ferries, other fire departments were called in to help. These included Hyannis, Yarmouth and Centerville-Osterville-Marston Mills.

The investigation into the fire is continuing.
