Battle Ground Natural Healing offers a treasure trove of cannabidiol, or CBD, products to treat a variety of health conditions without the side effects people might experience from conventional medicine.
Co-founder Christina Townsend became interested in CBD to treat her own ailments.
“I was working in the medical field and I had severe anxiety,” Townsend said. “I’ve been on a lot of different medications for that, but all of them had a lot of side effects or didn’t work well. I had a friend who had epilepsy and she was getting hemp CBD from her cousin in Oregon, and she started sharing it with me and I’m going to make her into a tea. I got rid of my anxiety without any side effects.”
Townsend said her friend then moved away, so she lost her main relationship with CBD products. Then she had to take matters into her own hands.
“When I started researching CBD, I found that it either had higher THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) contents, which I didn’t want (because I) had the surgery, or it was way too expensive,” Townsend said.
From there, Townsend decided she wanted to offer “higher quality” CBD products that did not include THC at an affordable price. THC is a psychoactive substance, which produces the “high” associated with cannabis. Townsend said CBD is not inherently psychoactive and is safe for children. Before opening the store with her husband, Gabe, she said she worked as a surgical assistant.
Besides treating anxiety, she said, CBD also helps people manage pain, inflammation, seizures, and neurological conditions such as autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is more commonly known as ADHD. Townsend said she also has clients who use it to treat diabetes, control blood pressure or help with sleep problems. There are also different forms of CBD products they sell that treat pets for many of the same issues.
On things like autism, Townsend said parents told her that CBD made a “day and night” difference for them.
“CBD actually works with your endocannabinoid system, which is the master regulator of your entire body, which is responsible for regulating mood, pain, sleep, and basically all of your body’s functions,” she said. “When it doesn’t work properly…it can often create symptoms.”
When people with autism take CBD, Townsend said their attention span improves and they are better able to regulate themselves. She said communication skills and sleep issues can be resolved for them, too.
For things like pain, she said, conventional medications can negatively affect other parts of the body like the liver, “while CBD won’t harm those (body parts).”
“Not only will it not have those side effects and it won’t be harmful to your body, but it will also have other benefits,” Townsend said. “So if you use it to treat pain, it will also help you improve your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, (and) sleep better.”
Before Townsend took CBD, she noticed her anxiety manifested with symptoms such as heart palpitations, shivering, and feeling like she was going to fall. Presently, she said she is not as anxious as she used to.
The store sells a variety of products such as chewing gum, honey, capsules, drinks, and bath bombs. They also sell topical lotions, which are creams that are applied to the skin for aches or pains, or tinctures, which are usually taken by placing them under a person’s tongue.
