As cannabis legalization continues to sweep the nation, another movement has emerged in its wake.

In the past three years, polling procedures and city council decisions to legalize or decriminalize naturally occurring plants and fungi — the term referring to a substance with mind-altering effects — have emerged across the country.

This list of substances typically includes psychedelic mushrooms, ayahuasca, mescaline, ibogaine, and peyote. Hemp is also considered an entheogen. These decimal measures do not generally apply to LSD or MDMA.

While Oregon is currently the only state in the United States where psilocybin is legal for therapeutic use, more than a dozen additional cities and counties have decriminalized psilocybin and other enzyme agents as well. A measure that would legalize the drug statewide will be introduced before Colorado voters in November 2022.

It is important to remember that “decriminalization,” in this context, simply means that law enforcement “removes priority” in enforcing the ban as much as possible. Entheogens technically remain illegal in these cities and counties.

Read on for a list of emerging narcotic hot spots in America and the legal issues you should avoid in each to ensure you stay within your legal rights.
